Artist Statement

As a visual designer and visual artist, Yongil Lee (born in 1974, Seoul) creates experimental works at the border of design and art.

He has been working as a designer for a long time and utilizes various computer tools for his work based on his rich design experience in visual design, product design, and web design. His unique capability enables him to create works in a wide range of genres, including visual graphic works, interactive art, and media art. He focuses on the historical record of art and works to discover inspiration for and document his work from the politics, society, and culture of the current era.

He was the winner of the Merit Award at “Design for Asia” and the Best Design Company Award at the “Korea Design Exhibition”.

Currently, he is running a design-based startup in Korea, creating experimental works that traverse the boundaries of art, design, and craft.

Statement about “Coagulated Time” Series: Since the Industrial Revolution, the politics, society, and culture of Asian countries were briskly restructured into the wave of westernization. Westernization became the standard for dividing the old from the new, and this became the starting point of modernization.

Today, Korea also lives in a social structure where tradition overlays on the exterior of westernization.

The theme of this work, “Coagulated Time”, was designed to observe the past, present, and future of overlying cultures through the heterogeneous combination of tradition and westernization. “Coagulated Time” visually expresses overlying cultures by heterogeneously coalescing traditional and western symbolic elements through the paper collage technique.

“Coagulated Time”, a series of works, combines the “traditional dress”, a symbol of the Joseon Dynasty, and modern fashion elements to reveal the cross-section of two cultures that overlap. Another work, “Blending”, expresses the state in which two heterogeneous cultures are mixed through the contrast between the cross section of a modern building and the image of a shaman.

“Coagulated Time” is a symbol of Korea and Asia today, where tradition and westernization overlap, and is also a discovery of the future through the fusion of past and present tenses.
