Artist Biography

William C. Turner is a realist oil painter influenced by Renaissance and contemporary realist artists. Bill is best known for portraying distressed vintage vehicles.

As a young man his severe dyslexia hindered him from going to college to study art. However, after retiring from a 35-year career in autobody restoration Bill earned a BFA and MFA in visual arts painting. He shared his love of art, teaching drawing and art history for nine years at the college level.

Currently he volunteers at the VA in Manchester, NH working with veterans interested in painting and drawing. He is a juried member of the International Guild of Realism and has been juried in several times during their semi-annual online shows. His work has received national awards from Allied Artists of America and the National Society of Painters in Casein and Acrylic.

Artist Statement

This body of narrative oil paintings was inspired by Greek and Roman mythology. I use vehicles as surrogates for humans in these paintings relying on the title and symbols within the work as clues for the viewer. The unique style and character of these old rusted relics challenge my imagination.

Much time is devoted to research and preliminary drawings. Today we are traveling in generic vehicles which have many safety and technological features, but little distinguishes one model or color from another. I choose to celebrate the unique character, color and style of vintage vehicles at a time when beauty and individuality was an important factor in vehicle design. However, I paint rusted and distressed vehicles which is totally contrary to my previous career in autobody restoration.
