Artist Biography

Rossella BLUE Mocerino has created a cast of enigmatic characters who inhabit her colorful oil paintings. Her inspiration has been and continues to be the Venice Carnival. Never without a mask, always mysterious, forever dreaming, these figures are immensely human. She describes her work as figurative, not realistic. “Who wants to do reality?” she states. Exhibitions at the historic Luna Baglioni Hotel in Venice and more recently in many branches of the New York Public Library, have given this contemporary artist visibility and recognition. The New York-based, Italian born artist has started an art blog, thepainterseye.com where one can find more details about her work and art in general with an emphasis on current European shows.

Artist Statement

Italy has had a major impact on my becoming an artist. My family moved to New York when I was young. On my first visit back, on a train looking out at the landscape, this thought popped into my head: “I want to be an artist.” Never looking back and shifting my interest to the human figure, art had entered my life. Many years later while attending the Venice Carnival, I found the subject matter that would hold my interest and reshape the work that carries my name. Through the masked figures of the Venice Carnival, while molding them into my very personal vision, I can explore the very complex dynamics of human emotions and aspirations. Forever an individualist, a believer in magic everywhere and ultimately an optimist, I welcome you to my world of dreamers, idealists and lovers.

In my most recent work, the number paintings, the present meets the past. The architectural details and the numbers are found in real addresses in Venice and Paris, my latest muse. In the pentaptych, The Gaze, the inspiration has come from Francis Bacon’s triptychs.
