Artist Biography
Born and raised in Philadelphia, PA, American artist Barbi Thomer Niblick relocated to Phoenix, AZ where she discovered her passion for art. Mostly self-taught, Barbi is best known for her use of bright, vibrant colors in her abstract oil paintings. An emotive painter, she often uses painting as a physical and emotional release. “Diagnosed with bipolar 2, I’ve come to realize a large focus in my work has been to cope with those symptoms.” Abandoning rational thought she allows the paint to speak for her, often painting with her hands because it acts as a conduit to connect the tactile experience to the emotions she feels. Barbi’s dream is to impact society by bringing awareness to mental health and personality disorders in an effort to destigmatize them. Having personal experience with these issues, her goal is to help others through her artworks. She is a member of the National Oil & Acrylic Painters Society, Sonoran Arts League, and ArtLink Phoenix. In addition to being in personal collections nationwide, Barbi’s work has been on display at On the Edge Gallery in Scottsdale, AZ as well as online exhibitions through Fusion Arts.
Artist Statement
Each painting I create is a story of triumph. Using my hands to feel the paint as it moves on the canvas, the bipolar 2 symptoms that are constantly cycling within me are eased. Often starting out “ugly” while experiencing a depressive state, these pieces transform into a collection of vibrant, colorful, and energetic pieces as the cycle progresses to positive. After learning of this bipolar 2 diagnosis, I realized the focus in my work has always been to cope with those symptoms. When a collector adds one of these to their personal collection, they are getting so much more than just a pretty picture. These pieces are created as a way to spread awareness of mental health disorders while helping to destigmatize them.
