Cathryn Peters is a primarily self-taught artist who has been professionally producing original design, one-of-a-kind antler basket sculptures since 1990. Born in Vancouver, WA and living most of her life in Minnesota, she now resides in rural west-central Wisconsin.
Cathryn’s work has been featured in several craft-related publications and regional and national exhibitions. The recipient of an Emerging Artist Fellowship through the Minnesota Arrowhead Regional Arts Council/McKnight Foundation in 2005, Peters traveled to England, studying basket weaving with willow basketmaker, author, and instructor Olivia Elton Barratt.
Cathryn’s work has won prizes and awards at national exhibitions and shows and is in several private collections in the US and England.
My original design, rib-style antler basket sculptures are a study in the possibilities of creating one-of-a-kind, asymmetrical, contemporary pieces; using the antler as the focal point, working with both hand-gathered natural materials and commercially prepared rattan reed.
Gathering and processing natural materials used in my artwork keeps me grounded and in contact with nature; while creating and weaving the basket satisfies my artistic need to express myself.
