Artist Biography

After graduation from high school, Mary Felton applied and was accepted into the Fashion Illustration Program at Parsons School of Design in New York City. Unfortunately, she never got to attend due to lack of funds. Alternatively, she applied and was accepted into the Illustration & Design Program at the Art Institute of Boston in the heart of Kenmore Square in Boston, Massachusetts.

For several years after graduation, she worked as a commercial artist before switching to fine art and ultimately charcoal drawing. Marriage and having a son and daughter inspired this native New Englander to move out of the city. The Felton family set down permanent roots in a small town in Massachusetts, just south of Boston. The newly built house fulfilled a lifelong dream of a permanent studio where Mary could work and create. The area hosts a lively art scene, which Mary has embraced over the years.

Mary’s artistic accomplishments reach far beyond her studio having won many awards over the years in local, national and international art competitions. She has had many solo shows in Boston, New York City and locally and has been represented by galleries in MA & NYC. Her career also includes memberships in such prestigious organizations at the Hudson Valley Art Association in New York, the Catharine Lorillard Wolfe Art Club also in New York, the International Guild of Realism and the Academic Artists Association where she was the recipient of the first Gold Medal of Honor ever given. Her works are part of the corporate art collections of Yamana Gold in Toronto, Canada and the University of Kentucky Health Care, Lexington, Kentucky.

After working in several different mediums, Mary came “home” to charcoal in 1996 and has embraced it as her sole medium ever since. The contrast between stark white paper and velvety black charcoal allows her to create the powerful and bold images she could not create otherwise. Subjects vary, with her main affinity being horses and the figure with the work varying from extreme realism to loose representational styles. She works from photo reference with compressed charcoal on white paper, occasionally adding highlights with “white charcoal”.
