Artist Biography

Thayne Yazzie is a Native American artist, musician, and multimedia storyteller. Raised in the high-altitude desert of the Navajo Reservation in St. Michaels, AZ, Thayne started his creative endeavors illustrating and drawing imaginative creatures and listening to Navajo stories while living in a small house with no electricity or running water. 10 years later, Thayne moved to Bellingham, WA where he was immersed in an abundance of water and marine life found within the Pacific Northwest. Over the course of his professional STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) career(s), Thayne has used art and cultural design as a way of teaching science, place-based ecology, and the importance of building a healthy relationship with the environment and the world around us.

Artist Statement

Thayne utilizes both ink illustration and digital media to bridge science with art, culture and spirituality. Each animal represented throughout the Salish Sea series is a species that lives specifically in the Puget Sound located within the Salish Sea where Thayne currently lives and works. For each piece, there are two styles of work – a scientific illustration and a traditional Coast Salish design. This combining of styles demonstrates Thayne’s mission to encourage and inspire students to be both scientists and artists.
